站立；起身
以雙腳支撐身體，保持直立姿勢；也可指從坐著或躺著的姿勢起身。
用法：常用搭配為 stand up「站起來」與 stand＋地點。stand up 可指從座位起身，也可指保持站立。

用法：此義通常不用進行式。主詞常是無生命名詞。

忍受；容忍
指能夠忍受令人不舒服、討厭或難以接受的人、事或情況，常用於否定句。
用法：後面可接名詞、代名詞或動名詞。說「受不了做某事」時，用 stand＋動名詞，不用不定詞。
I do not like standing in the hot sun while I wait for the bus.
我不喜歡站在大太陽下等公車。
My sister cannot stand hot food.
我姊姊不能忍受辣的食物。

維持有效；保持不變；仍然成立
指決定、規則、提議、紀錄或約定在受到質疑、討論或檢視後，仍保持原狀或繼續有效。
用法：常用 stand as＋補語，或用決定、規則等作主詞。
After looking at the test again, the teacher said that the first grade would stand.
老師再看過考卷後，說第一次的成績仍然有效。
The school rule still stands this year.
這項校規今年仍然有效。

採取立場；主張；支持
指對某個議題抱持特定觀點，或表明自己支持、反對或代表哪一方。
用法：stand for 也可表示「代表、象徵」，與「支持」的意思要依語境判斷。stand with 表示支持某人或某一方。
Our class stands up when someone is mean to a classmate.
有人欺負同學時，我們班會站出來。
I know where she stands on this idea.

指某人參加選舉，爭取某個職位或代表資格。
用法：常見句型為 stand for＋職位，或 stand in＋選區。
