其他的；另外的
用於名詞前，指其餘的人、事、物，或與已提及者不同的人、事、物。
用法：通常說「other students」「other information」，不說「other a student」。若指另一個單數可數名詞，通常用「another」，如「another student」。但「the other＋單數名詞」可指兩者中的另一個。
Some students took the bus. Other students went to school by bike.
有些學生搭公車。其他學生騎腳踏車去學校。

與「the」連用，指兩個人或事物之中未被選到、未被提及的另一個。

I have two pens. One is red, and the other is blue.
我有兩支筆。一支是紅色的，另一支是藍色的。
My sister chose the window seat, so I sat in the other seat.

與「the」連用，指某個群體中除了已指出的人、事、物以外的全部其餘部分。
用法：「the others」是代名詞，後面不可再接名詞；「the other students」後面則要接名詞。「some … the others …」指特定群體中剩下的全部。

另一種；不同的
用於表達某人或某物在性質、身分或觀點上與所說的不同，常見於「the other＋名詞」或「on the other hand」等結構。
用法：固定片語「on the other hand」用來提出相反或不同的考量，常與「on the one hand」呼應，但前者也可單獨使用。
Taking the bus is cheaper; on the other hand, driving is easier for our family.
搭公車比較便宜；另一方面，開車對我們家來說比較方便。
We could order pizza, but the other way is to cook noodles at home.
我們可以叫披薩，但另一個方法是在家煮麵。
